Pesky blood vessels!

ellen in pre-op

Great news! I just left the OR with Dr. Walker and the entire Doctor PosseTM. He discovered a few problems that they were able to address right away. As is common with my family we are all stingy SOB’s and we can’t just leave well enough alone. Well, that stinginess has carried over to my kids. We discovered that Emma’s blood vessels just didn’t like the earlier laser therapy and thus, two of the vessels fought their way open again. We have some tough blood which was causing Emma to be anemic in a big way. Even Ellen was starting to become anemic.

Dr. Walker lased these two pesky communicating vessels and this time he made sure they’d stay closed. He lased a lot larger section of the vessels than before and then focused on the immediate anemia symptoms with Emma. They tested her blood and discovered that there was only 3.1 cc of hemoglobin, while the average at this week in the pregnancy is 13 cc.  They transfused 17 cc of type O-negative blood into Emma via her umbilical cord which brought her final count up to 11 cc. The fluid around Emma’s heart should disappear overnight.

For Ella, they drained away 1000 cc of fluid from her sack, so she will have much less playroom now. The result is that Ellen will be less bloated, but Ella will end up kicking her mommy a lot more.  I guess you gotta take the good with the bad in these sort of things. :-)

I’ll be staying the night again here with Ellen. Everything feels good now. I’m SO relieved. Dr. Walker is now confident that Ellen should be able to make it up 34 weeks before having a cesarean section delivery. This is fantastic news. I’ll post more pix and an updated video later on today.

OK, maybe I’ll be able to concentrate on more important things now…. like the Steelers big game against the whinny Seahawks this week.
